Parts Group: Stereo sound system / radio main unit
I have just installed an Audi Symphony Stereo main unit into a 2000 Audi A6 Quattro. The unit originally came from a 2001 Audi A8 Quattro.
As to electrical connections, the two units are interchangeable as to the plugs, as well as visually identical front and back. Although I have not tested the cassette player, the A8 unit is working just fine in the A6 vehicle including the connection to the CD changer in the trunk:
Audi did affix a sticker atop the main unit, indicating whether the unit was going into an A6 or A8. One possible reason is: the face plate surrounds are different, so the A8 unit doesn’t fit as snugly into the A6 front center console as the A6 unit does. The picture above shows the gap on the right; the picture below shows the gap on the left:
At first, I assumed that the face plate surrounds are easily removable so an A6 unit can easily be changed to an A8 unit and vice versa. Then, someone gently pointed out that it's not that simple, as this article explains, based on an Audi A8 owner's process of making an A6 unit fit into an A8. It seems to bypass a lot of hassle to just buy the correct unit.
